Ask the officer Ask the officer (January 07, 2004)

Menlo Park police officer Glenn J. Raggio answers questions about the police and law enforcement. Call 330-6396, or e-mail: asktheofficer@menlopark.org.

Q. Nearly all the police cars on the Peninsula are black and white. Why hasn't Menlo Park converted?

A. We are currently examining the possibility of a similar change, but money is an issue (the department hasn't purchased a new car in two years). It has always been a tradition in Menlo Park to be unique in our styles and, to a degree, our appearance. You might remember the "blazer era" in the 1970s, when Menlo Park police wore blazers and slacks instead of traditional uniforms. Many agree that our vehicle design is rather dated; in fact, we take some heat on it from time to time from other agencies. Black and white cars might very well be the answer; however, we want some distinction in the design -- some "Menlo" style, if you will.
