Corte Madera play: Disco's over, move on dude
Corte Madera play: Disco's over, move on dude
(January 14, 2004) ** Corte Madera students stage musical tribute to the 1980s.
Remember what it was like in the 1980s,
the decade of excess -- big hair, big shoulder pads, acid-washed jeans
and Rubik's cubes?
This week, eighth-grade drama students at Corte Madera School will re-create highlights of this era when they stage a musical tribute at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 15, in the school's multi-use room at 4575 Alpine Road in Portola Valley.
Students will sing and dance to popular 1980s hits, such as "Safety Dance" and "Walk Like an Egyptian." They will re-enact scenes from classic films of the decade, such as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."
Juliet Green, music specialist and drama teacher at Corte Madera, directs the production that involves 47 students, not just on stage but managing the house, running lights and sound, working backstage, and handling many other details.
The students have researched the era and designed the costumes, lighting and sets. They are doing the choreography and creating a multimedia presentation to show major events and trends of the decade, said Ms. Green.
All proceeds from the show will go to a charity chosen by the students -- the American Cancer Society. Suggested donation is $8.
