Interfaith event honors Martin Luther King

A performance by a multi-ethnic community choir and a speech by U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, are planned for a Sunday, January 18, interfaith event to honor the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Residents will also share their memories of Dr. King and of the civil rights movement at the event, which will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 625 Hamilton Ave. in Palo Alto. Call the church at 323-6167 for more information.

Readers swap views at library book club

Bookworms who aren't satisfied just with reading a book might find that the Menlo Park Library's Fiction/Nonfiction Book Club is right up their alley.

At gatherings held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month, members discuss a variety of books, with extra copies made available by the library. The next meeting is set for Tuesday, January 13, centering on "The Tortilla Curtain" by T.C. Boyle, a story of haves and have-nots in Southern California.

Meetings take place in the lower-level meeting room of the library at 800 Alma St. For more information, call 329-0916.
