Emi Frisk wins in geo bee
(January 21, 2004) The winner of the first round of the geography bee at La Entrada Middle School is sixth-grader Emi Frisk.
Emi and 64 other La Entrada students competed recently at the school.
The victory qualifies Emi to advance to the second round, in which students take a written test. The top 100 scorers on the test in each state compete in statewide matches on April 2. State winners then participate in the national bee, to be held May 25 and 26 in Washington, D.C.
Other first-round prizes at La Entrada were: Megan Conn, second place; Sam Falkenhagen, third place; Turner Baty, fourth place; and Tommy Forter, fifth place.
At the individual grade level, the winners were Oscar Coaquira, eighth grade; Dana Edwards, seventh grade; Emi Frisk, sixth grade; Tommy Forter, fifth grade; and Sam Falkenhagen, fourth grade.
The national competition will air in May on the National Geographic Channel, and afterward on PBS stations. Check local listings for dates and times. First-, second- and third-place winners receive college scholarships of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000, respectively.
