Good year for Almanac's Holiday Fund

Holiday Fund contributions will go directly to programs that benefit Peninsula residents. Contributions will be distributed by the Peninsula Community Foundation to the 10 community service organizations listed below. No administrative costs will be deducted from the gifts and all donations will be shared equally.

The agencies supported by the fund are: the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula; Clara Mateo Alliance, which provides shelter and support for the homeless; Family Support Center of the Mid-Peninsula, which provides counseling referral, support and information to families in the East Palo Alto area; Lytton Gardens, a Palo Alto-based community offering housing, health care and supportive services for older adults; Ravenswood Family Health Center, which provides medical and human services for East Palo Alto and southern San Mateo County; Second Harvest Food Bank, the largest collector and distributor of surplus food on the Peninsula; Shelter Network, which provides short- and long-term housing and services to more than 1,000 homeless people each year; St. Anthony's Padua Dining Room, which serves hundreds of hot meals six days a week to people in need; Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of San Mateo County, which provides sexuality education in high schools and middle schools, as well as education programs for parents; Youth and Family Enrichment Services, which offers services for runaway and homeless youth, programs in substance abuse, abuse prevention and crisis intervention.

The foundations and companies providing major matching grants to the Holiday Fund are: the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Applied Materials, Blue Oak Foundation, Oracle Corp., Peninsula Community Foundation, and the Rotary Club of Menlo Park.

Last year 260 Almanac readers contributed just over $90,000 to the Holiday Fund, an amount matched by foundation donors. With the matching grants, more than $180,000 was distributed to 10 nonprofits.
