Traffic hiccups likely due to Sand Hill work

Drivers in the area of Sand Hill Road and Santa Cruz Avenue may experience traffic troubles beginning on Monday, January 26, and lasting about three weeks as work continues on Stanford University's Sand Hill improvement projects.

Asphalt paving and utility work will cause partial lane closures and diversions, and workers will be out directing traffic, Stanford officials said. For more information, call 306-0350.
County posts information on sex offenders

Finding out if there is a high-risk sex offender living in your neighborhood is now just a couple of mouse clicks away -- if you live in unincorporated San Mateo County.

The Sheriff's Office last week began posting mug shots, descriptions and addresses of high-risk offenders living in unincorporated areas. A list of charges is included. The list is available on www.smcSheriff.com by clicking on "High-Risk Sex Offender Notification" under the heading "What's New."

As of the Almanac's press deadline, there was only one listing, for a resident of the North Fair Oaks neighborhood.

The Menlo Park Police Department is considering taking a similar approach, said Cmdr. Greg Rothaus.

"We've got a pretty extensive Web site and an active Internet approach," he said. "We're looking into this as a possibility."

Menlo Park has residents who are high-risk sex offenders, but no serious high-risk offenders, he said. Police officials need to look at who they have and what they've done, and then consider how much information to give out about their locations, he said.
