Woodside High football coach resigns following controversy Woodside High football coach resigns following controversy (January 21, 2004)Packy Moss resigns head coaching position at Woodside High

Packy Moss, the head coach of varsity football at Woodside High School, has resigned his position, said Woodside Principal Linda Common. He will continue as a physical education instructor at the school, Ms. Common said.

Mr. Moss had been head coach for three consecutive losing seasons, with this year's season coming to an abrupt end in November when Ms. Common cancelled the last two games.

Her action was in response to the players' refusal to identify several teammates heard chanting "F--- Packy" in the locker room after a loss. The coaching staff agreed with Ms. Common's decision.

In a November Almanac interview, Mr. Moss said he was primarily to blame for the team's record, but said the players' negative attitude and lack of training discipline were also factors.

"It's my fault," Mr. Moss said in summing up the season. "I take that responsibility for our season this year, last year and the year before. [But] if you're going to play in a sport where you've got to be strong and fast, you have to work on it."

There were reports from parents attending games that other parents had shouted disrespectful remarks at Mr. Moss from the stands during games.

Mr. Moss did not respond to repeated requests for an interview for this story.
