Book group discusses 'East of Eden'
(February 04, 2004) The community is invited to join the discussion of John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" at the Tuesday, February 10, meeting of the Menlo Park Library's Fiction/Nonfiction Book Club.
The program runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the lower-level meeting room at the library, 800 Alma St., near Ravenswood Avenue, in Menlo Park.
Steinbeck historian David Laws will discuss the novel and show slides of places along the Monterey Peninsula and Salinas where the story was set.
"David Laws is a scholar who is able to entertain as well as instruct," says Menlo Park outreach librarian Roberta Roth. "He did a wonderful, well-attended program a while ago as part of the Steinbeck centennial celebration, and this is a golden opportunity to have him back."
The monthly discussion is free and open to people of all ages, and whether or not they've read the book, says Lauren John, book group facilitator. The library makes sure there are extra copies of the book available -- so readers can borrow instead of buy, she said.
