Portola Valley campaigns for school tax hike
Portola Valley campaigns for school tax hike
(February 04, 2004) As part of the campaign for a higher parcel tax for Portola Valley's two public schools, an informational meeting and community ice cream social will be held Tuesday, February 10, in the multi-use room at the Portola Valley Town Center, 765 Portola Road.
The $290 parcel-tax proposal, Measure C on the March 2 ballot, would renew the current $195 parcel tax that expires July 1, 2004, and increase it by $95 to provide about $670,000 annually for the next 10 years.
Under the proposal, funds would be used to continue and improve core programs in science, reading, math and writing; retain and attract quality teachers; keep small classes; and help offset budget cuts and increasing costs.
All residents of the Portola Valley School District are invited to come to the event, which starts at 7 p.m. with a presentation about the district's two schools: Ormondale (grades K-3) and Corte Madera (grades 4-8).
Parents and community members are invited to ask questions about the March 2 parcel tax election and have them answered by school board members.
For more information about the meeting and parcel tax, or to volunteer to work on the campaign, call campaign co-chairs Denise Blocker at 851-9546 or Janet Lorenzen at 851-5212; or district trustees Donna Carano at 851-2880 or Karen Jordan at 529-0345.
