Meriwether Lewis kicks off Stegner lecture series
(February 04, 2004) Meriwether Lewis, as portrayed by Clay Jenkinson, will reminisce about his historic 1804 expedition across the country in a presentation Tuesday, February 17, at 8 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts.
This celebration of the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition will kick off the 11th annual Wallace Stegner Lecture Series, sponsored by the Peninsula Open Space Trust. Bill and Jean Lane of Portola Valley are among the sponsors of the series that honors the late author and voice for the environment, and raises money for the Menlo Park-based land conservancy.
Other lectures in the series include:
** Thursday, March 4, Diane Peavey, who speaks of ranch life and resources in Idaho.
** Thursday, May 20, nature writer Sy Montgomery, who has been chased by a gorilla in Zaire, hunted by a tiger in India, and undressed by an orangutan in Borneo -- and lived to write about it.
Nationally known botanist Peter H. Raven will give a special lecture for upper-level subscribers on Thursday, June 3, at 8 p.m. Dr. Raven, director of the Missouri Botanical Garden, was recognized by Time magazine as a "Hero for the Planet" in 1999.
Tickets are $20 each for individual performances, either through POST or the performing arts center.
