Environmental training workshop for teens
Environmental training workshop for teens
(February 04, 2004) Bay Area teens who want to make a difference in helping protect the earth might be interested in an environmental workshop this weekend, February 7 and 8.
"Deep Green Global Training" is being sponsored by the Acterra High Schools Group on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Peninsula School, 920 Peninsula Way, in Menlo Park; and on Sunday for various projects from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Saturday program will feature speakers, workshops and hands-on activities. Julia Butterfly Hill, who sat in a tree for two years to block loggers, will speak, as will Patrick Reinsborough, a community organizer and former campaigner for Rainforest Network.
Workshops will include subjects such as sustainable food, art and activism, solar energy, globalization, media skills, organic gardening, and habitat restoration. On Saturday night there will be creative performances and live music.
On Sunday, participants have several choices. In Huddart Park they can learn the ancient art of tracking animals from trackers at the Riekes Center near Menlo Park. Or they can view ecosystems and a new green building at Stanford's Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve, or learn organic gardening at the Ohlone School.
Cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Participants must sign up in advance for Sunday events.
Founded in 1990, the Acterra Schools Group works with Bay Area teens to plan environmental activities and develop leadership. The group meets Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Peninsula Conservation Center, 3921 Bayshore Road in Palo Alto.
