World War I veteran dies World War I veteran dies (February 11, 2004)

Caption with picture in print edition: Birl Britton, left, among the last surviving World War I veterans, died recently in the nursing home at the Menlo Park Veterans Affairs hospital, said local veterans activist Michael J. Salome of Menlo Park, who is shown with Mr. Britton. Mr. Britton was 108 years old, Mr. Salome said. A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mr. Britton served with the U.S. Army in France and received the French Legion of Merit, said Mr. Salome, a World War II veteran who is a longtime volunteer at the VA hospital in Menlo Park.
