Simitian raises more than $1 million for state Senate race
(February 25, 2004) ** Supporters of candidate Ted Lempert report $309,000 in "independent expenditures."
The money is flowing fast and furiously in the Senate District 11 race between Assemblyman Joe Simitian and former Assemblyman Ted Lempert, with Mr. Simitian's campaign fund total breaking the $1 million mark over the weekend.
Whereas Mr. Lempert agreed to voluntary spending limits -- capped at $637,000 by Proposition 34 -- Mr. Simitian is free to spend as much as he wants to.
Mr. Lempert said Proposition 34 allows him to spend additional money on his candidate statements that appear in the official sample ballot and voter information pamphlets distributed in the three counties that the district touches. Any money he has raised surpassing that expense plus the voluntary spending cap will be used for the general election or refunded to his donors, he said. As of last week, he had raised about $700,000, he said.
According to campaign finance information on the California Secretary of State's Web site, Mr. Simitian had raised about $1,010,750 as of February 22.
Independent expenditures
The figure above do not include independent expenditures made in behalf of the candidates with money raised outside the candidates' campaign committees. About $309,350 in independent expenditures had been spent to support Mr. Lempert as of February 23, according to the Web site. About $66,000 in independent expenditures had been spent to support Mr. Simitian as of the same date, the Web site said.
Mr. Lempert, who heads the public education advocacy group EdVoice, was an assemblyman representing the 21st district until 2000. Mr. Simitian has represented that Assembly district since 2000.
Contributions are listed on the Secretary of State's Web site at www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections.htm.
