Caption with Carol Ivie photo in print edition: Urged on by West African djembe drums and the cheers of their classmates, Belle Haven Elementary School students performed lively African dance steps February 27 as part of an assembly for Black History Month. The students had worked for eight weeks to learn dances and chants from Chike Nwoffiah of the Oriki Theater in Mountain View, program coordinator Patricia Watkins said. A $5,000 grant from the Peninsula Community Foundation is funding this three-part series of dance classes and performances, which will also include programs from the Mexican and Polynesian cultures.
