Filoli's 25th spring celebration Filoli's 25th spring celebration (March 03, 2004)

Thousands of tulips are expected to be in bloom when the Filoli estate in Woodside celebrates its 25th "Spring at Filoli" on Saturday, March 13, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"More than 75,000 bulbs are planted in the garden this spring," says greenhouse manager Jim Salyards. "The Sunken Garden will be particularly amazing with a display of 4,000 apricot-color 'Dordogne' tulips." Daffodill Hill will be blanketed with more than 150,000 flowers in bloom.

The planted pots at the estate will be filled with an assortment of 3,300 bulbs and a variety of annuals, such as pansies, violas and foxgloves.

Botanical artists and silk flower arrangers will give demonstrations and the Highlighters of Broadway by the Bay will provide entertainment.

Children's activities include a greenhouse workshop. "We have a wonderful assortment of lemon, apple, nutmeg, even coconut-scented geraniums ready for children to plant in their own decorated terra cotta pots," says Mr. Salyards. Docent-led nature hikes will take families by Red's Barn and the Sally McBride Nature Museum.

Admission is $15 for adults; $1 for children, age 2-12; and free for children under 2. Box lunches are available at $15 for adults and $7 for children, with advance reservation required. For more information and tickets, call 364-8300, ext. 508.
