Diane Peavey to give Stegner lecture
Environmental author Diane Joseph Peavey, who explores life on a sheep and cattle ranch in Idaho, will speak Thursday, March 4, at 8 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. In a lecture sponsored by the Peninsula Open Space Trust honoring the late Wallace Stegner, Ms. Peavey will explore the conflicts that can occur between ranching and resource protection. USGS lecture on mapping the West
"Mapping the American West" will be the subject of a lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 4, in Building 3 of the U.S. Geological Survey, 345 Middlefield Road in Menlo Park.
Geologist James G. Moore will tell the story of the legendary Clarence King, who led an expedition that surveyed the 40th Parallel, discovered Mount Whitney, and became the first director of the U.S. Geological Survey in 1879.
The event will also mark the 125th anniversary of the founding of the nation's first civilian science agency, and the 50th anniversary of the Geological Survey in Menlo Park.
