It's Girl Scout cookie time It's Girl Scout cookie time (March 10, 2004)

Girl Scout troops in Menlo Park, Woodside and Portola Valley are now selling Girl Scout cookies through March 21. Forty-one local troops with 542 girls are taking part in this year's sale, a tradition the Girl Scouts began in the 1920s.

Girl Scouts are selling eight varieties of cookies, including top-selling Thin Mints. Other favorites are Samoas (caramel, chocolate, and coconut), Tagalongs and Do-Si-Dos (two kinds of peanut butter cookies), and Trefoils and All-Abouts (plain and chocolate shortbread). Two new cookies are offered this year: Lemon Cooler and Double Dutch, a chocolate chocolate-chip cookie.

Some 55 percent of the money to fund Girl Scout programs comes from the annual cookie sale, the Girl Scouts say.
