Oak Knoll celebrates reading
Oak Knoll celebrates reading
(March 17, 2004) An airplane pilot, a green grocer, Stanford athletes and a host of community members visited Oak Knoll School March 1, sharing their enthusiasm for reading with students in the K-5 school in Menlo Park.
The event was an annual one, the school's participation in Read Across America Day, sponsored by the National Education Association to promote literacy and a love of reading among children. It also celebrated the birthday of well-known author Dr. Seuss, who would have turned 100 on March 2.
Besides reading a book in a classroom, the 40 visitors talked about why reading is important to them, professionally and personally. This year's diverse group of readers included doctors, lawyers, an architect, a professional triathlete, a chef, dentist, policemen and firemen, school administrators, veterinarians, an artist, an author and the mayor of Menlo Park.
