Menlo Watch: Commission to consider stop sign after crash
(March 31, 2004) After an injury accident took place March 18 at a Menlo Park intersection where residents had asked for added stop signs, City Manager David Boesch said the city's Transportation Commission will take up the matter.
Two vehicles collided at Laurel Avenue and Durham Street, injuring the drivers and a passenger and knocking over a wooden fence located near a bus stop and in front of a home, according to police.
Resident Steven Rasmussen said a similar accident had taken place two years before; therefore, he and his neighbors had petitioned the city to change the intersection from a two-way stop to a four-way.
Now, city officials will conduct traffic counts at the intersection and notify nearby residents when the Transportation Commission discusses the issue in April, Mr. Boesch told Mr. Rasmussen in a March 25 e-mail. If the commission recommends installing new stop signs, that recommendation will be sent to the City Council for approval.
Hazardous waste drop-off planned
The drain is no place for paint, thinners, motor oil, pesticides and other dangerous chemicals, which is why San Mateo County officials are holding a hazardous materials drop-off event in Menlo Park on Saturday, April 10.
Residents of Menlo Park, Atherton, Portola Valley, Woodside, Redwood City and East Palo Alto can bring these substances and other potentially dangerous items, such as batteries, drain openers and cleaning solvents, for proper disposal. Details will be provided to residents when they register for the event.
To register, call 363-4718 or go to www.smhealth.org/hhw/appt.
Free compost for Menlo Park residents
Bring your own shovels and containers to the entrance of Bayfront Park at the end of Marsh Road in Menlo Park, and you can pick up free compost. That's the invitation being issued to residents of the city of Menlo Park.
The compost will be available for pick-up beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 3. For more information, call 330-6763.
