Crew finishes second in regatta Crew finishes second in regatta (April 07, 2004)

Silicon Valley Crew, a Menlo Park-based independent rowing club, clocked the second fastest time for the 1,500-meter sprint race in a Novice Regatta at Lake Merced the weekend of March 6.

A total of 23 boats competed, from as far away as San Diego and Arizona, in the regatta for all novice rowers, 18 and under, put on by the Pacific Rowing Club.

"I'm very pleased for our athletes who beat every local crew and several powerhouses in the region," said Coach Mike Still, former 1987 World Champion rower. "We have a cohesive group of rowers who have been practicing hard and faithfully in the Bay off Redwood City since last September."

Finishing with a time of 6 minutes, 34 seconds, were Menlo-Atherton student Danielle Galarneau, Menlo School students Carly Adams and coxswain Michala Smotrich, San Mateo College student Ashley Kerman, and Sacred Heart School student Katie Dickinson.

Two boats manned by local high school boys finished third in their events.

Coach Mike Still competed in the 1992 Olympic Games as an alternate for the U.S. rowing team and in the 1987 world championships held by the International Olympic Committee in Copenhagen. He also rowed and coached for UCLA and coached briefly at Stanford University.
