Menlo School stages 'Spoon River Anthology' Menlo School stages 'Spoon River Anthology' (April 21, 2004)

As Menlo School drama students prepare for the April 30 opening of their spring play, Edgar Lee Masters' classic, "Spoon River Anthology," they are getting some inside tips from Betty Garrett, a member of the play's original 1963 Broadway cast.

Menlo drama teacher and "Spoon River" director Elizabeth Orr invited Ms. Garrett to the campus on Friday, April 16, and she brought along video footage highlighting her career. A Hollywood and Broadway veteran, she had long-running television roles as the neighbor in "All in the Family," and the superintendent's wife on "Laverne and Shirley."

"Spoon River" opens at Menlo on Friday, April 30, and runs for two weekends, ending Sunday, May 9. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. in the Florence Moore Auditorium on the school campus in Atherton. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. They may be ordered by e-mailing

The setting for the play is a cemetery in the fictional town of Spoon River, Illinois. Ghosts of the deceased voice the secrets they guarded during their days on earth.

Members of Menlo's cast are: Naomi Frank, Emily St. Amand, Nelson Chen, Haley Horowitz, Regan Riskas and Matin Movassate, all of Atherton; Caitlin Morrison, Katie Augustus, Alexis Meredith, Alex Powar, Mara Schleck and Laura Yost of Menlo Park; Jennifer Mitchell and Jessi McDade of Woodside; Kari Hall of Portola Valley; Lucy Stark of Hillsborough; and Jake Heimark of Palo Alto.
