Local teams win basketball titles Local teams win basketball titles (May 05, 2004)

Four local National Junior Basketball teams took home titles at a recent championships series in Santa Clara. The teams have players from Atherton, Menlo Park, Portola Valley and Woodside and are with the Redwood City chapter of the Silicon Valley division of National Junior Basketball.

Here is how the teams did at the March 13 and 14 series at Buchser Middle School in Santa Clara:

** The third and fourth grade girls team (12-1), coached by Randy Haldeman, Alex Morse and Patrick Shannon, defeated Palo Alto 32-19 to become the Division 3 "Slam Dunk" champions. Players included Menlo Park residents Malea Bieselin, Keara Haldeman, Emily Hornberger, Julia Maggioncalda and Annie Schein; Portola Valley residents Nina Loshkajian, Diane Masket and Shannon Morse; and Atherton resident Lauren Dunn.

** The fifth and sixth grade girls team defeated Willow Glen 44-17 to become the Division 2 "Hot Shot" champions. Todd Roberts, Chris Arrington and Patrick Wisecarver coached the team, which included Menlo Park residents Jamie Ferguson, Kristy Perez, Ashley Roberts, Sarah Rosales, Mallory Stevens and Taylor Wentz; and Atherton resident Annie Madding.

** The fifth and sixth grade boys team from Redwood City, which included Joe Davidson of Woodside and Bryan Munks of Portola Valley, defeated Evergreen from San Jose 73-72 to become the Division 2 "Hot Shot" champions. The team was coached by Nick Pastore and Larry Michelini.

** The seventh and eighth grade boys team, became the Division 1 "Slam Dunk" champions by defeating Palo Alto 41-37. The team included Woodside residents Seena and Emaan Amid-Hozour; Atherton residents Patrick Glendenning, Scott Morton and Reid Schultz; and Menlo Park resident Jay Slavik. Brian Morton and Anthony Bertolacci coached the boys to a 14-1 season.
