Information meeting for Menlo Park school board candidates
Information meeting for Menlo Park school board candidates
(May 05, 2004) People interested in serving on the school board in the Menlo Park City School District are invited to an information meeting for candidates at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, at the district office, 181 Encinal Ave. in Atherton.
Two of the five board seats are up for election in November. The candidate filing period opens July 12 and closes August 6. Trustees Terry Thygesen and Bruce Ives, whose four-year terms expire in November, said last week they would run for re-election.
At the meeting, trustees Nancy Serrurier and Laura Rich will talk about what it's like to serve on the board, the time commitment, the issues that might come up, and the rewards of this community service.
The Menlo Park district has an enrollment of about 2,000 students in its four schools: Laurel (K-2) and Encinal (3-5) in Atherton, and Oak Knoll (K-5) and Hillview Middle (6-8) in Menlo Park. Its annual budget is about $19 million.
Voters passed a $22 million bond measure in 1995 to update school facilities. Voters approved three parcel-tax measures from 2000 to 2003. The Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation has raised $9.3 million since it was founded in 1982.
