Tracking bobcats, lynx and cougars

North America's wild cats -- bobcat, lynx and cougar -- will be the subject of a slide show and presentation by master tracker and author Mark Elbroch on Monday, May 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Riekes Center, 3455 Edison Way in Menlo Park (between 5th Avenue and Marsh Road).

Starting with "What makes a cat a cat," Mr. Elbroch, author of several books on mammal and bird tracks and signs, will review the natural history of the felines of North America with slides, anecdotes, and observations. Cost is $12.

The Riekes Center and Wildlife Associates will also give a Junior Naturalists Workshop on Saturday, May 8, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Wildlife Associates Animal Sanctuary near Half Moon Bay.

Kids 8 to 11 will get up-close opportunities to learn from live animals, interpret animal tracks and signs, learn ancient living skills and plant signs, and more. Each participant will go home with a field guide and the know-how to use it.

Cost is $95.

For information on both programs, or to sign up, call the Riekes Center at 298-3405.

Business query: Too many envelopes?

Here's a suggestion for businesses that find they have boxes of excess envelopes. Maybe the envelopes are clean and useable, but don't show the new address or jazzy logo. You don't have to dump thousands of perfectly good envelopes into the recycling bin. Acterra wants them. Call Acterra at 962-9876, or go to www.acterra.org.
