Laurel cookbook off the griddle
Laurel School's first cookbook in years is back from the press and available for Mother's Day.
Sponsored by the Laurel PTA, the cookbook features staff favorites, family traditions and a special section of recipes that kids can cook. There's also an up-to-date history of Laurel School, now with grades K-2, in Atherton.
To order a cookbook at $12 each, write a check payable to Laurel PTA; include your name, phone number and address; and mail it to: Dawn Bercow, 175 Hedge Road, Menlo Park, 94025.
County science fair participants named
Among the many local students who won awards or otherwise participated in this year's San Mateo County Science Fair are:
** Lussier and Kayla Emmerson, fifth-graders at the Corte Madera School, won a special award from the Sequoia Audubon Society for their experiment titled "Ashy Days," which was on the effects of ash on fish and plant life in an effort to understand the impact of the San Diego wildfires on ocean life.
** Several sixth- and seventh-graders at Corte Madera School were finalists in the competition. They were: Brad Godfrey, sixth grade, for his electrostatic motor; Kyle Rothschild-Mancinelli, sixth grade, for his geological work on ground truthing; Chloe La Londe, seventh grade, for her work on visual memory; and Maya Mathur, seventh grade, for her work titled "Remembering Numbers versus Letters and the Effect of Visual versus Auditory Distractions."
** At St. Joseph's School in Atherton, these eighth-graders were recognized: Danny Bathgate, R.J. Carver and Risa Harada took first, second and third place respectively in the physical science category. Jonathan Beckman won first place in the biology category. Ana Braskamp won honorable mention in the behavioral science category. Herve-Louis Sarner, Richard Gronberg and Ryan Morris were all recognized as participants in the physical science category. Sarah Peterson was recognized as a participant in biology.
