Around Town: Allied Arts featured in Filoli show
(May 05, 2004) Menlo Park's Allied Arts Guild will be one of the "cherished beauties" in "Cherished Beauties of the Peninsula," a historical heritage presentation to be given from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, at the Filoli estate in Woodside.
The event kicks off Filoli's "Preserving Architectural Heritage Week," which includes its annual flower show, beginning with a reception on May 6 and continuing through May 9.
Other "cherished beauties" are the San Mateo County Courthouse and three historic homes in Los Altos. The show benefits the Los Altos History Museum and the Palo Alto Museum of American Heritage, the San Mateo Historical Association and Filoli.
Cost is $60 for the general public and includes lunch and a tour the Filoli's house and gardens.
League of Women Voters
It's time for the annual meeting of the League of Women Voters of South San Mateo County, which will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Menlo Park's Trellis restaurant, 1077 El Camino Real. Jacqueline Jacobberger, president of the League of Women Voters of California, will be the guest speaker. For more information, call the League office at 325-5780.
49 and counting
Kepler's Books is celebrating its 49th birthday from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 15, with an anniversary party featuring local authors. Firoozeh Dumas, Barry Eisler, Andrew Sean Greer, Geoff Nunberg and Tobias Wolff will share their personal memories about Kepler's dating back to the early days.
There will also be music, food, raffle prizes and fun for kids. Roy Kepler, a social activist and pacifist, first opened Kepler's in a small space next to the Guild Theater.
May is also the month for Kepler's annual "give back" program, "It's for the Kids," which supports local libraries.
Back at the ranch
The Midpeninsula special riders horse show and play day will be held Saturday, May 22, at Westwind Barn in Los Altos Hills. The event begins at 11 a.m. and winds up about 3 p.m. Play day is sponsored by B.O.K. Ranch and Westwind 4-H riding for the handicapped, both offering horseback riding lessons for children and adults with special needs. To find out more, call 366-2265.
Lunch and a song
Arias from "Don Giovanni" will be performed by Elizabeth Caballero at the annual luncheon of the Peninsula chapter of the San Francisco Opera Guild on Saturday, May 22, at 11:30 a.m. at the Los Altos Golf and Country Club.
Maestro Donald Runnicles will discuss the forthcoming San Francisco Opera season. Cost is $50 and will benefit the Guild's education programs. For more information, call 408-378-4823.
Rhapsody in Bloom
Five private Hillsborough gardens will be on tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 22, to benefit the San Mateo County Historical Association. Tickets are $50 each with reservations and payment required by May 14. Tickets and directions will be sent after receipt of payment.
