California Bach Society concert in Portola Valley

The natural Muller-McFarland gardens will be open for a concert to benefit the California Bach Society on Sunday, May 16, at 3 p.m.

"Flammende Rose," a series of nine arias by Handel, will be performed by soprano Ruth Escher, accompanied by violinist David Wilson, and cellist Elisabeth Reed. Self-guided tours of the garden and a reception will follow the performance.

New Yorker editor to speak at Stanford

David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker magazine, will present a free lecture, "The Press Since September 11," on Monday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Stanford University's Kresge Auditorium.

At 11 a.m. the following day, Mr. Remnick will join a panel of other journalists and academics for a discussion of the news media's performance since the 2001 terrorists attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. This program, to be held in the Schwab Residential Center on Serra Street, is also free and open to the public.

Other panelists will be Joann Byrd, former ombudsman at the Washington Post and a member of the New York Times committee that investigated the misdeeds of former Times staff writer Jayson Blair; Stanford history professor David Kennedy; and David Talbot, Salon.com founder and current editor-in-chief.

Raul Ramirez, news and public affairs director of public radio station KQED-FM, will moderate the discussion.

Green Foothills picnic set for Saturday

The Committee for Green Foothills will celebrate four decades of protecting open space on the coast at San Pedro Park in Pacifica, Saturday, May 15, with a potluck picnic and hikes.

At 10:30 a.m., docents will lead hikers on one of two routes through the 1,150-acre park. The choice is between a leisurely 1.75-mile walk to Brooks Falls, and a tougher 2.5-mile hike up to views of the San Pedro Creek valley.

Members and friends of the committee should bring a dish to share at the noon picnic. A program at 1 p.m. will introduce CGF's new Executive Director Tom Cronin, as well as Legislative Advocates Lennie Roberts, April Vargas, and Brian Schmidt.

The picnic is free, but hikers should make a reservation at 968-7243 by Friday, May 14.
