Bouquets and art at Atherton show Bouquets and art at Atherton show (May 19, 2004)

By Jane Knoerle
Almanac Staff Writer

It was an afternoon of art and flowers when the Atherton Garden Guild held its 17th standard home flower show May 5 at the Atherton home of Dr. and Mrs. Ronald Castellino.

Prize-winning flower arrangements were on display in the Castellino's home, along with their collection of American art. The outdoor gardens were the setting for the horticultural exhibits that included roses, flower specimens, tree or shrub branches or stems featuring foliage and foliage specimens in bloom.

The show was dedicated to the memory of the late Molly Apple, who was the Guild's first lifetime member, past president and active member for 27 years.

Top honors in the design division went to Karlene Elder, who won the Tricolor Award, and Kathy Ladra, who received the Designer's Choice Award. As always, the miniature arrangements, not exceeding 5 inches, were crowd pleasers.

Suzanne Legallet was flower show chairman. Noted for the beautiful gardens at her Atherton home, Ms. Legallet has also served as chairman of the Filoli flower show. The flower show program featured original art work by Nancy Faisant and was produced by Linda Haynie.

Punch, sweets and hors d'oeuvres, organized by Margaret London, Sally Young, Patti Cavender and Betty Weinstock, were served in the garden. Members' husbands joined their wives for a post-show event organized by Marion Oster and Kathy Schubin.

Joan Sanders and Karlene Elder arranged a display of community projects featuring the club's support of the Atherton Library, Holbrook-Palmer Park, and the restoration project at Allied Arts Guild.

The Atherton Garden Guild, which is limited to 40 members, was founded in 1966. Lynne Heppberger is the current president. All proceeds from the show will be used for projects to benefit Atherton and the surrounding community.
