Lois Crozier-Hogle to be honored Sunday Lois Crozier-Hogle to be honored Sunday (May 19, 2004)

Lois Crozier-Hogle, one of the founders of the Peninsula environmental movement, will celebrate her 90th birthday with a party to benefit three of the environmental groups that she has been nurturing for decades.

The Committee for Green Foothills, Acterra, and Hidden Villa are throwing a party Sunday, May 23, to feature her life of activism. The event will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Duveneck house at Hidden Villa. The suggested donation is $90.

In 1962, Mrs. Crozier-Hogle helped found the Committee for Green Foothills, which has grown to be an environmental powerhouse and helped preserve Peninsula scenery ever since.

The late Wallace Stegner, an eloquent voice for the Peninsula environment, once said: "In leading and inciting and inspiring so many kinds of people over so many years, Lois has created more than just another environmental group.

"Thanks to Lois we are much more a community, a neighborhood, a family, than we would have been without her example, her enthusiasm, her energy, and her vision."

Besides helping found the Committee for Green Foothills, Mrs. Crozier-Hogle worked for the YWCA, where she was responsible for chapters on college campuses in 10 states.

In her 80s, Mrs. Crozier-Hogle interviewed outstanding Native Americans and published their stories in a book, "Surviving in Two Worlds: Contemporary Native American Voices." In writing it, she said, "Let the Indians speak for themselves."

Lennie Roberts, a fighter for the Peninsula environment for more than 30 years, remembers when Mrs. Crozier-Hogle first recruited her at a meeting of the Ladera Garden Club about 1968. "Lois is an inspiring person," she said. "She is a role model for many, many people."
