Roger Reynolds Nursery marks 85 years
(May 19, 2004) Roger Reynolds Nursery is celebrating its 85th year of retail nursery business from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at 133 Encinal Ave. in Menlo Park.
Vendors with free samples will join the celebration, which will include demonstrations, raffles and refreshments.
In 1919, nurseryman Roger Reynolds purchased 15 acres of property near the railroad tracks in Menlo Park from the Felton Land Co.
Stories of those early days include tales of men who jumped the rails and camped on the nursery property.
The redwood grove that still exists today was used as a rented picnic and party area for "city" folks who came down the Peninsula for a day in the country.
For many years Edy's ice cream parlor occupied the space that is now the Carriage Stop adjoining the nursery. Today the nursery is owned by Roger Reynold's granddaughter, Sally Halstead.
