Portola Valley man heads Stanford board
(May 26, 2004) Burton McMurtry, a Portola Valley venture capitalist and a member of the Stanford University Board of Trustees since 1997, was named the board's new chair on Tuesday, May 4.
"I'm really honored and enthused to lead this board. This is a great institution, and we have not arrived at what we can be yet," Mr. McMurtry said.
Mr. McMurtry succeeds investor Isaac Stein as chair of the 30-member board.
Mr. McMurtry co-founded several venture capital partnerships, including Institutional Venture Associates and Technology Venture Investors. He has a master's degree and a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford, and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Rice University. He spent 12 years in engineering and management for GTE Sylvania.
Mr. McMurtry is a member of the Hoover Institution Board of Overseers and the advisory councils to the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the school of engineering. He is also a trustee of Rice University and the Carnegie Institution of Washington.
