Persian music, poetry at Woodside Library Persian music, poetry at Woodside Library (May 26, 2004)

A night of music and poetry is on the program Thursday, May 27, at the Woodside Library, with the return of Nejad and his ensemble of traditional Persian instruments.

Nejad, who uses one name only, will perform Persian music -- an encore of sorts for the Woodside community. He gave a well-received performance at the library two years ago at an event also sponsored by the Friends of the Woodside Library.

The music will be enhanced with "poetry of the mystics," including works by Rumi, recited by longtime librarian Fred Pohlmann.

A native of Iran, Nejad plays a range of instruments, including the santour, a stringed, percussive instrument; the tar, a stringed instrument that is plucked or strummed; the zarb, a type of drum; and the ney, a flute-like instrument. He is a teacher and composer as well as a performer.

The free event is set for 7:30 p.m. at the library, 3140 Woodside Road. For more information, call 851-0147.
