A wheelie good time at 'Tour de Menlo'
(May 26, 2004) The first Tour de Menlo, a family-friendly bike ride/walk held mostly in Atherton, drew an all-ages crowd of about 170 people on Saturday, May 22.
"It was a great day, even though it was under mostly cloudy skies," said Almanac publisher Tom Gibboney. The event was co-sponsored by the Almanac and the Rotary Club of Menlo Park.
Riders were almost evenly divided between the strenuous 37-mile ride to Highway 92 and back and the more leisurely 10-kilometer circuit around the Lindenwood neighborhood in Atherton, Mr. Gibboney said.
Attractions at the Menlo-Atherton High School base camp included face painting, a bicycle safety course led by Woodside resident Rick Anderson, and a display of vintage police cars, Old Tom the antique Menlo Park fire truck and the Atherton D.A.R.E. program's classic Mustang.
The Menlo-Atherton High School's wrestling and lacrosse teams staffed the food booth, raising money for their sports programs. Beneficiaries of the event were the Atherton Tree Committee and Trees for Menlo.
