Big gift to Opportunity Center Big gift to Opportunity Center (June 02, 2004)

Thanks to a $100,000 donation from the Hewlett-Packard Co., construction of the new Opportunity Center of the Midpeninsula to provide housing and services for the homeless and near-homeless is fully funded.

"This is great news," said Don Barr, president of the board of the Community Working Group, which has raised the $24 million needed to build the new center on Encina Avenue in Palo Alto.

When it opens in 2006, the Opportunity Center will provide 89 units of housing for low and very low income people, plus social services for individuals and families. Included will be a drop-in center; showers and laundry; phones and computers; transportation vouchers and a clothes closet; counseling; and a center for homeless and at-risk women and children, with a separate entrance.
