A 27-year-old man was saved from injury in a drive-by shooting because of the coins in his pant pocket, said Sgt Paul Kunkel of the Menlo Park police.
The man was walking in the 1200 block of Madera Avenue in Menlo Park at approximately 10:50 p.m. on June 10 when a blue Sedan pulled alongside him and someone with a handgun opened fire, police said.
A bullet struck the man in his upper right thigh, in the area of his pants pocket. A handful of coins in his pocket deflected the bullet and left him uninjured, although the coins themselves were badly damaged, police said. The suspects were not located.
