The Menlo-Atherton Little League season ended this week at Willow Field with the crowning of a new champion. Dogged by a steadfast Brix club all through the season, and again in the playoffs, Lutticken's finally overcame its arch-rival once and for all, winning the championship game 12-8 on Sunday, June 13.

True to form, Brix didn't go quietly. After defeating Draeger's 6-5 in the quarter-finals, Brix faced the daunting task of beating undefeated Lutticken's twice to take the title. Against Draeger's, Peyton Smith banged a two-run homer in the fourth to start a rally that brought Brix from a 4-1 deficit to a 6-4 lead. Matt Newman's bases-loaded double drove in three to cap the inning.

Tomas O'Donnell took the ball for Brix in the Saturday semifinal battle and went the distance as Brix won the right to meet Lutticken's again with an 11-6 victory. Peyton Smith, Ryan McGill and Reed McConnell all had multiple RBI days in support of O'Donnell. Cameron Bell had four smooth assists at second base.

Nils Gilbertson pitched valiantly for Lutticken's to keep his team in the game, but Brix was not to be denied. Nick Henze made two remarkable picks at second base to lead the defense.

Sunday's game saw some fine defensive work by Brix's young Colin McGill, as he chased down a long outfield ball to start an important fifth inning double play. The offense went large in the third with the usual suspects -- Bell, O'Donnell and Ryan McGill -- all stroking hits to lead a seven-run rally.

But it wasn't enough to contain a Lutticken's team determined to take its place at the head of the pack. Strong pitching by Chase Warren and Casey Monroe and timely hitting from Henze, Gilbertson and Monroe propelled Lutticken's to the victory and the title.
