M-A students struck by SUV are recovering M-A students struck by SUV are recovering (June 23, 2004)

The 11th-grade Menlo-Atherton High School student who was hospitalized Monday, June 14, after being struck by an SUV in front of the school was out of Stanford Hospital's intensive care unit as of Thursday, June 17, M-A Principal Eric Hartwig told the Almanac.

The student received a concussion but no bones were broken, Mr. Hartwig added, noting that he had visited with the boy's parents last week. The other student struck in the accident, also an 11th-grader, suffered only minor injuries and left the hospital the same day, Mr. Hartwig said.

The young men, part of a group of students waiting on the sidewalk, had a red light but crossed anyway at the intersection of Middlefield Road and Ravenswood Avenue, said Lt. Eric Grimm of the Atherton Police Department. They were struck by a northbound SUV that was apparently not speeding, Lt. Grimm said.

Pedestrians have the right-of-way in a crosswalk, regardless of the state of the traffic light, but the driver's view may have been obstructed by a line of vehicles waiting on Middlefield to turn left onto Ravenswood, Lt. Grimm said. The driver has not been charged with a traffic violation, he said.

The students were returning to M-A after a mid-morning break, a violation of the school's requirement for students to stay on campus while school is in session, Mr. Hartwig said.
