Loggins to headline 'Symphony' Loggins to headline 'Symphony' (July 07, 2004)

Grammy award-winning Kenny Loggins will entertain a crowd of thousands when he headlines Summer Symphony, an annual benefit concert for the Children's Health Council (CHC), on Sunday, July 18, at Stanford's Frost Amphitheater.

The concert marks the close of CHC's 50th anniversary year and will feature an opening performance by the California Youth Symphony. Samantha Mohr of KPIX Channel 5 will return as master of ceremonies for the second year.

"For many people, this event introduces them to CHC and lets them know what we do and who we serve," says event co-chairman Lou Ann Winchell. It also raises money to allow the agency to offer services to children and families that can't afford them, she adds.

Last year's concert with folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary drew a sellout crowd of 6,000 and raised a record $605,000.

Soft rock singer/songwriter Kenny Loggins' career has spanned more than 30 years. He's had 12 platinum and 14 gold albums.

For the second year, Lou Ann Winchell of Portola Valley and Eve Jaffe of Atherton are Summer Symphony co-chairmen. They head a committee of 23 volunteers. An extra 200 volunteers pitch in the day of the event to usher, set up chairs, take tickets and more.

The Summer Symphony committee members are: Annie Barnett, Amy Boyle, Julie Brody, Charlene Cogan, Lisa Gerould, Shelley Hutter, Suzanne Killea, Kathy Layendecker, Michael Lazarus, Ellen Leanse, Kim LeMieux, Janice Meisel, Lisa Mooring, Chris Rivera, Annette Siegel, Mary Stevens, Suzanne Valdez, Katherine Westerman, Quin Whitman, Carol Young and Kimberly Young.

Gates open at 4:30 p.m. for picnicking and pre-concert entertainment. The concert begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are: chair, $75; lawn, $50; children (11 and under), $25. All individual tickets are for general-admission seating. For more ticket information, call 617-3859.

Picnic suppers may be ordered from Andronico's Market and be picked up at the store the day of the event. Food will not be sold at the concert.

The Children's Health Council was founded in 1953 to assist children with complex behavioral and development problems. Its services include the Esther B. Clark Therapeutic Day School, located on the Health Council's campus at 650 Clark Way in Palo Alto.
