Woodside High senior wins Kolozsi award Woodside High senior wins Kolozsi award (July 14, 2004)

A June graduate from Woodside High School is the winner of the 2004 Kelly J. Kolozsi Memorial Scholarship, established by family and friends of Mr. Kolozsi, who grew up in Atherton and graduated from the University of California.

Larane Cornejo said she will use the scholarship for studies at the University of California at Berkeley. She follows in the path of last year's winner, Andy Tzelepsis, a Woodside High graduate and now a sophomore at Berkeley. He was honored again this year by the Kolozsi selection committee as winner of the continuing award.

The Kolozsi awards are given annually to graduates of high schools in the Sequoia Union High School District. The criteria for selection are that candidates meet academic standards for admission to the University of California and achieve personal success, including overcoming difficulties. The amount of the award, which is not made public, is based on the student's financial need.

Eight seniors, representing all four high schools in the Sequoia District, received merit awards. Each will enter one of six UC campuses this fall. The recipients are: Menlo-Atherton , Jan Lin and Miguel Ibarra; Woodside , Jaqueline Guevara and Jeanette Ramirez; Sequoia , Ginelle Curincita, Monica Gutierrez and Yvonne Ortega; and Carlmont , Nicholas Dikas.

A continuing merit award was given to Vanessa Cruz, a 2003 graduate of Sequoia High, who will continue to study at UC Santa Barbara.

The scholarships are awarded in memory of Kelly Kolozsi, who was killed in a car accident in 1988 at the age of 24, the victim of a drunken driver. The son of Tita and John Kolozsi, he attended Laurel and Encinal schools, and graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School in 1982 and UC Santa Barbara in 1986. He worked at Montgomery Securities in San Francisco at the time of the accident.

Members of the selection committee are Marty Fuller, Lyn Hobach, Bryan Kolozsi, Tita Kolozsi, Jeanette Ogburn, Betty Oliver and Dan Siegel.

Students graduating from any Sequoia district high school in June 2005 and planning to attend a UC school may apply for the awards in February. Additional information is available from the scholarship coordinator at each high school.
