Notes Notes (July 14, 2004)

Summer break for Menlo council

The summertime break for the Menlo Park City Council continues on Tuesday, July 13, when the weekly council meeting is canceled. The officials are scheduled to be back in the council chambers at 801 Laurel St. at 7 p.m. on the following Tuesday, July 20.

The August 3 and 10 meetings are also tentatively scheduled to be canceled.

Revelries curbed

The long July Fourth weekend brought with it barbecues, boating and fireworks, but also an increase in traffic violations. According to the California Highway Patrol's Redwood City office, there were 21 drunken driving arrests, 200 speeding tickets, and 70 seat-belt citations, between Friday, July 2, and Monday, July 5, in the area of San Mateo County south of Millbrae Avenue. In the county as a whole, there were 38 drunken driving arrests and three drunken driving-related accidents. There was one drunken driving citation in Atherton.

PV girl seeks help for equestrian competition

Being a competitive equestrian can be expensive, as 17-year-old Fiona Graham of Portola Valley has discovered.

Fiona has qualified for the national championship of the U.S. Pony Club to be held July 21- 23 in Kentucky, but she needs to raise $5,000 to get herself and Sizzle, her pony, to the event and back.

About 1,000 equestrians are expected to participate. If she makes it to Kentucky, Fiona would compete in the "Games" division, in which horse-and-rider teams race and test their skills, agility and balance.

Tax-exempt Championship Fund donations may be sent to Carol Malnick of the Portola Valley Pony Club at 180 Larsens Landing, Los Altos, CA 94022. For more information, call Mary Stapleton at 365-9352.
