Flurry of construction in Sand Hill Road area
Flurry of construction in Sand Hill Road area
(July 14, 2004) There's a lot of humanity coursing through the bustling intersections where Sand Hill Road, Santa Cruz Avenue, Alpine Road and Junipero Serra Boulevard meet.
And, of course, the crowd includes plastic-hatted, fluorescent-vested construction crews as Stanford University continues rebuilding and widening the dual crossroads.
This month, the work includes grading and removing trees on the east side of Sand Hill between Santa Cruz and San Francisquito Creek. There will be no pedestrian access there until a new path is finished in October, Stanford officials said.
Construction will also continue on the new Sand Hill Road bridge over the creek. On the nearby Stanford Golf Course, holes 3 and 4 are being reconfigured, and are scheduled to be closed until next spring.
In addition, work is being done on the new roadway and path on the east side of Alpine (the golf course side) between Junipero Serra and Rural Lane. With the path closed until August, bicyclists will share Alpine with motorists, and pedestrians won't be allowed through the immediate area, officials said.
Piers will also be installed for a new retaining wall on Santa Cruz bordering the Pacific Hill condominiums and the Sand Hill Gateway office complex.
Motorists may be hit with some headaches. During the work, southbound Santa Cruz Avenue will be closed to one lane between the Pacific Hill condominiums and Sand Hill. And Alpine Road will be slimmed to single lanes in both directions between Junipero Serra and Rural.
