Fire district plans for assessment
Fire district plans for assessment
(July 28, 2004) Local fire district officials have taken another step toward possibly establishing a new revenue source for the district: a special assessment on property owners to pay for fire-suppression services.
The Menlo Park Fire Protection District board on June 15 endorsed a staff request to pay MuniFinancial -- a Temecula, California-based consulting firm -- $10,500 to begin research and planning for the complicated approval process required for a special assessment.
District officials have been studying the possibility of asking owners of property in the 29-square-mile district to tax themselves further to fill growing budgetary gaps left by the state's diversion of district property-tax revenue to schools. The fire board is likely to decide at its August 10 meeting whether to put the question to property owners this fall.
