Local horse groups are hoping Friday the 13th is their lucky day, as they collect items to sell at a large rummage sale this weekend.

On Friday, August 13, volunteers will be on hand from 5 to 8 p.m. at the dropoff point at Woodside Elementary School's playground area, 3195 Woodside Road in Woodside, to accept donations of household goods, toys, games, electronics, tools, clothing, sporting equipment, books, videos, CDs, and horse tack.

They will not accept mattresses and large appliances.

The items will be sorted, tagged, and offered to the public at a Summer Jumble Rummage Sale on Saturday, August 14, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Woodside Elementary.

Refreshments will be on sale, including coffee, fresh-baked goods, and snow cones. All proceeds go toward maintaining the town-owned John R. Kiely Equestrian Center, at 3375 Tripp Road in Woodside, used by four nonprofit groups: Woodside Junior Riders, Woodside Pony Club, Woodside Horse Masters, and Woodside Vaulters.

Woodside Junior Riders is a summer English riding program for school-age children in the Woodside Fire Protection District. Open to riders 21 and under, Woodside Pony Club operates year-round. Woodside Horse Masters is a similar program for adult riders. Woodside Vaulters also runs year-round, and is geared toward children who like to do gymnastics on horseback.

Organizers say they spend thousands of dollars each year to maintain the fencing, trim the trees, and improve the arenas at the equestrian center. To help defray the costs, they have asked the 70 or so families who use the facility to participate in the rummage sale.

Any leftover items will be taken across the street and added to the Woodside Village Church's rummage sale pile to be sold later.
