No elections in school districts
(August 11, 2004) School board elections won't be held this year in the Menlo Park and Las Lomitas elementary school districts.
Each board had two open seats, but the August 6 deadline passed with no candidates filing papers to oppose the incumbents running for re-election, according to the San Mateo County Registrar of Voters.
Menlo school board
Incumbents Teresa "Terry" Thygesen and Bruce Ives will each have another four-year term on the school board of the Menlo Park City School District.
Mr. Ives is president of the school board, which sets policy for the K-8 school district. Trustee Thygesen, the previous board president, was co-chair of the campaign for the district's $298 parcel tax, approved by voters in 2000. Both live in Menlo Park and have children in district schools.
Las Lomitas district
Incumbents Lee Anderson and Steve Sowiski will serve for four more years on the five-member governing board of the Las Lomitas Elementary School District.
The board sets policy for the K-8 school district, which serves about 1,000 students from Atherton and Menlo Park.
Mr. Anderson is an education-policy consultant and lives in Atherton; this is his third term. Menlo Park resident and board president Steve Sowiski is a management consultant; this is his second term.
