People: Betsy Clebsch's Salvia book wins award
(August 18, 2004) Betsy Clebsch's book, "The New Book of Salvias: Sages for Every Garden," has won the 2004 Garden Globe Award for writing from the Garden Writers Association.
Ms. Clebsch lives in San Mateo County, just off Skyline Boulevard, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Her book is an expanded edition of her first book, "A Book of Salvias," and contains listings of 50 new plants and nearly 100 more photos and illustrations.
Salvias, commonly known as sages, grow throughout temperate and subtropical parts of the world and occur in many forms. The varied plants are noted for their resistance to pests and diseases, drought tolerance and beautiful flowers.
The Garden Globe Awards will be presented September 13 at the 56th annual Garden Writers Symposium at the Melville Marriott Hotel in Long Island, New York.
At a May 13 dinner at the Burlingame Country Club, Ms. Clebsch also received a horticultural arts award from the Garden Clubs of America. The Garden Clubs of America conference was hosted by the Hillsborough Garden Club,
Ms. Clebsch, who has been growing salvias on her property since 1984, says her garden is "a little gem."

Benjamin J. Archer, a student at Woodside Priory School in Portola Valley, recently participated in the U.S. Naval Academy's week-long summer seminar program in Annapolis, Maryland. Menlo teen spends
summer on stage
Fifteen-year-old Menlo Park resident Stephanie Glenn is spending her summer vacation on stage, attending Stagedoor Manor, a theater camp in the Catskills. Camp life includes having youngsters spend three weeks rehearsing 11 shows, then performing them for the public. Campers are ages 8 to 17.
