Math, science award named for volunteer Math, science award named for volunteer (August 18, 2004)

The Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation has established the Ingrid Smith Math & Science Award in honor of the school volunteer who recently lost her battle against stomach cancer.

Ingrid Barrett Smith, who was instrumental in raising funds for Menlo Park public schools, died at her home in Menlo Park on July 7, nine months after she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She was 48.

The award will be given annually to a teacher in the Menlo Park City School District who develops innovative methods of teaching math or science to students at Laurel, Encinal, Oak Knoll and Hillview schools.

Award winners will receive a grant to buy equipment, lab supplies or other materials.

"Our community has lost a wonderful mother, wife, friend and dedicated volunteer in Ingrid Smith," said June Flora, outgoing president of the education foundation. "We wanted to find a fitting and permanent way to acknowledge all that she has done for our children in local public schools."

Ms. Smith, a data-applications designer, served on the foundation's board and managed the foundation's database for fundraising and communications.

"Math and science were Ingrid's favorite areas of study," said her husband, Lyle Smith.

The foundation also is accepting donations in her name, consistent with the wishes of the Smith Family. Donations made in her name may be sent to the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation, P.O. Box 584, Menlo Park, CA 94026.
