Stephani Scott, who served as the Sequoia Healthcare District's part-time operations coordinator for about one year, has been appointed the district's new CEO.
Ms. Scott replaces Frank Gibson, who retired early this summer.
District board president Kathleen Kane said Ms. Scott is "extremely capable," and has the advantage of having learned the ropes of the job from her predecessor, Mr. Gibson.
Ms. Kane, a human resource consultant, and board vice president Malcolm MacNaughton last spring formed a subcommittee that screened four people interested in the job of running the district, a public agency that co-owns and helps administer Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City. The district is funded mainly through property taxes, and comprises Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Carlos and Belmont.
Whereas Mr. Gibson was an independent contractor, hired to perform certain duties that could require more or less than a 9-to-5 work week, Ms. Scott is a full-time employee of the district. The other three candidates for the position were independent contractors, Ms. Kane said.
Ms. Scott's annual salary is $82,000, representing a significant cost-savings for the district, which paid Mr. Gibson $120,000 annually.
Ms. Scott was acting executive director of a nonprofit organization before taking on her role as the Sequoia district's operations coordinator last year. Before that, she worked in both the nonprofit and for-profit worlds in business management.
According to a news release announcing her appointment, Ms. Scott has extensive experience in contract negotiations, grant-writing and program development.
Before her recent promotion, she played a significant role in developing a partnership involving the district, Sequoia Hospital, San Francisco State University and Canada College to create a satellite of the university's bachelor of nursing program at Canada.
The program's first class was launched last week.
