Robber invades apartment

Police were called to an early-morning, home-invasion robbery in the Willows neighborhood near the Veterans Affairs hospital in Menlo Park last week.

A woman working on her computer in an apartment on Coleman Place heard someone in the room behind her shortly after 3 a.m. on Monday, August 30, and turned to see a masked man armed with a knife, said Sgt. Paul Kunkel of the Menlo Park police.

The man demanded money, which the woman gave him, and he then fled on foot onto hospital property at 795 Willow Road, Sgt. Kunkel said. The robber entered the apartment through an unlocked door, Sgt. Kunkel said.

Police are looking for a 17-to-21-year-old African-American man, about 5 feet 10 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighing about 160 pounds. He was wearing black clothing at the time of the robbery. Anyone with information is asked to call the Menlo Park Police Department Investigations Unit at 330-6300.

Morrow trial will proceed on schedule

The trial of a Menlo Park man accused of killing his wife in 1991 will continue as scheduled in October, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Craig Parsons ruled August 30.

Prosecutors claim Joseph Morrow, 56, killed his wife Donna in December 1991, burying her body on his property in Los Gatos before fleeing to Colorado and then the Philippines. Mr. Morrow was arrested in the Philippines and returned to San Mateo County soon after his wife's body was unearthed in September 2003.

Mr. Morrow's defense attorney Robert Courshon asked the court to continue the case, arguing that, among other issues, a psychiatrist and psychologist needed time to review court transcripts and to evaluate whether Mr. Morrow can assist in his own defense.

Prosecutor Jack Grandsaert argued that the defense has had plenty of time to ready itself.

As for Mr. Morrow's health condition, Judge Parsons ordered Mr. Morrow to have planned biopsy surgery "in a more timely fashion" to accommodate the trial schedule.
