Sanda Day O'Connor at courthouse
(September 08, 2004) Caption with Carol Ivie photos in print edition: The stained-glass ceiling bathes San Mateo County's historic Courtroom A in Redwood City in a new glow after a recent restoration that also included dedicating the judge's bench to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. The justice, who was on hand for a September 3 ceremony, got her first legal job as a deputy district attorney in San Mateo County. Fueled by private donations, the $700,000 restoration included removing a large air conditioning unit that once blocked some of the light, adding more seating, and restoring decorative gold rosettes on the ceiling, said Mitch Postel, executive director of the county's historical association.
