Poizner material omits Republican tag

Editor:

It bothers me that I cannot tell from reading Assembly candidate Steve Poizner's print material that he is a Republican. Why does he refrain from making that clear?

He must know that many of us believe the current White House administration has been such a disaster, we can't imagine ever voting for a Republican again. If you are pro-choice, pro-environment, pro-civil liberties, and you believe in a balanced budget that does not inflict our debt on our children, the Democratic Party is the place to be.

Not impressed by glossy literature

Editor:

I am backing Ira Ruskin for state Assembly. He has a proven track record in public service and is supported by all the environmentalists I know.

The campaign of his opponent, Steve Poizner, makes me nervous. First, he has been sending out scads of expensive, glossy campaign literature. I have found this to be typical of candidates who do not have the public interest at heart and who are beholden to a developer or other high rollers who have a hidden agenda.

Second, he emphasizes the he is a "teacher" which seems to imply that that is his principal occupation. Not so. He taught for one year only.

Third, when Republican candidates talk about reforming education they usually mean budget cuts or privatization or both. Under the cover of reform, their plans invariably result in gains for the affluent at the expense of everyone else. That is why in this race I support Ira Ruskin.
